  • Bolivia’s Next Steps

    A rainbow of campaign posters covered the stairways and tinted glass walls in the Bolivian Congress building. After arriving in the crowded office lobby of leftist Congressman Gustavo Torrico, I sat for hours next to union leaders and other rank-and-file constituents, waiting to speak with the politician.

    Torrico was meeting with members of the Bolivian Workers Center, one of the largest unions in the country. When I finally sat down on the couch in his dimly lit office, the smiling Congressman explained one of the key reasons for the success of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS), the party he and indigenous President Evo Morales helped construct.

    Benjamin Dangl was born in the US in 1980. He began working in journalism from age 16, and studied writing and literature at Bard College and Latin American history and literature at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina.

    He is the author of the book The Price of Fire: Resource Wars and Social Movements in Bolivia (AK Press, 2007) and a contributor to Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Latin American Issues (McGraw-Hill, 2006)

    He has been a participant in various anti-war and anti-globalization movements in the US and elsewhere in the Americas. Dangl has worked as a journalist covering politics and social issues in Latin America for over six years, writing for publications such as The Guardian Unlimited, The Progressive, The Nation, Utne Reader, CounterPunch, Latin American Press, Indian Country Today, Z Magazine, La Estrella de Panama y dozens of other publications. He has received two Project Censored Awards from Sonoma University for his investigative reports on US government and military intervention in Latin America.

    Dangl teaches Latin American history and politics and globalization at Burlington College in Vermont. He is the founder and editor of Upside Down World, a news and analysis publications on politics and social movements in Latin America, and works as the editor of Toward Freedom, a progressive perspective on world events.
